3 INTRODUCTION The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared their independence after Japan’s surrender.

5 Indonesian Facts  Indonesia is on the continent [or next] to Asia.  Indonesia has over 18,000 islands.  It has over 200 active volcanoes.  It is also the largest archipelago[a large chain of islands] on Earth.  Indonesia spans almost 2 million square kilometers between Asia and Australia.

6 MORE FACTS  Many of the islands are uninhabited.  Sumatra and Sulawesi are home to most of the population of Indonesia.  In Indonesia the mountains are called Barisan, Kapaas and the Maoke.  The capital is Jakarta.
