3 Nonprofit serving East Palo Alto high school students From the College Track website: “Our mission is simple and straight-forward: get our students successfully through high school and into college.” Of 2001 and 2002 graduating classes, 100% students have been accepted to colleges College Track

5 College Track admits about 35 ninth grade students each year College Track Demography Hispanic

7 Curriculum Mission To help College Track students develop leadership and teamwork skills To have students articulate their values, personal credo, and goals To develop the foundation for smart decisions in high school

9 Curriculum Logistics 12-session course in College Track’s ASAP summer program ASAP students are rising ninth graders, just entering the College Track Program Course will occur twice weekly in afternoon (after academic classes) Class size ~ 12 students Students come from various school systems

11 Use of Progressive Ideology What we’re aiming for: Encouraging students to develop their own reasons for wanting to go to college Grounding these reasons in the students’ prior experiences Preparing students to take ownership over their decisions in high school Having students learn from each other

13 Design Process Going over ideas with College Track directors. Getting thumbs up / thumbs down from College Track students on our ideas for activities. Enlisting the help of peers in class on better scaffolding methods, timing etc.

15 Theme One: Leadership and Teamwork Experience the challenges and benefits of working with their peers Understand the difficulties and rewards of being an excellent leader

17 Theme two: artiFACTcapsule Think about how their past experiences have formed foundational values for them Envision how these values can help to determine their futures
