3 Working Assumptions Challenges of collaboration are rooted in fundamental social processes. Complex social problems cross organizational boundaries and can only be solved through collaboration. We can improve collaboration by leveraging fundamental social processes.

8 By the End of the Course You Will Be Able to: Understand the risks and rewards of collaboration in education Apply research about the underlying social and organizational processes that inhibit and facilitate collaboration to case studies and personal experiences Examine contextual factors – historical, political, legal, social, and cultural – that affect collaboration in diverse educational settings Analyze the process for developing shared perspectives and goals that facilitate people working in concert on complex social problems Develop recommendations to enhance collaboration in organizations relevant to your own professional goals and interests

9 Grading and Final Assignment Class activities will include readings, case discussions, small group activities, presentations, and work shopping. Participation 50% 2-3 page analysis of a case, posted on site Case Analysis 10% Participate in a web-based 3D negotiation simulation and write 1-page reflection Simulation 10% Guidance document for enhancing collaboration for an identified organization Policy brief explaining the benefits of improved collaboration for a particular segment of the education sector Final Assignment 30%

10 Final Assignment Options Option 1: Guidance Document A succinct overview of the missions, goals, and/or approaches of the organizations Rewards and potential risks of enhanced collaboration Identified inter-group and organizational barriers to collaboration Action steps that will enhance their future collaboration, using evidence drawn from course materials Option 2: Policy Brief Clearly identifies the problem of absent or deficient collaboration in the segment Articulates the benefits enhanced collaboration in the segment Describes the potential barriers to collaboration in the segment Provides key recommendations for collaboration, using evidence drawn from course materials
