1 Introduction to Magnet Schools What is a magnet school? A magnet school is a school of choice. This school has a special focus of study, configuration of grades, or schedule. Magnet schools have the same expectation of high achievement for students that all other Joint School District schools have. 4 How can I get my child into a magnet?  Understand your child's abilities and talents  Understand your child's skills  Talk with your child about a magnet  Research whether a neighborhood school or a magnet is a better match. FIRST STEPS:  Check the district's web site for information (look under schools)  Obtain application form from web site, school, or magnet director.  Fill out application for all family children whom you wish to attend.  Send in application to designated place or person. NEXT STEPS: FINAL STEPS:  Lottery will take place in early spring.  You will be informed of your child's placement status.  If offered placement, reply yes or no.
