Direct Vs.Instruction In Elementary School Created By: Jessica Mumm

What are the 4 models of Instruction? Each model possesses theoretical foundations explaining certain goals and how they can be achieved.

Direct Instruction Based on Research Findings: –Direct instruction is the most widely used instructional strategy. –However, no single approach is the most appropriate for ALL students.

Behaviorist Approach Focuses on observable and specific behavior. It emphasizes the learning of discrete items of information through practice and reinforcement as well as memorization. The teacher reinforces responses that are desirable and punishes ones that are undesirable.

Observational Learning Describes changes in behavior, thinking or emotions.

Advantages of Direct Instruction Guarantees specific learning outcomes Uses time effectively Easy to implement Easily measures

Disadvantages of Direct Instruction Low transfer rate Problem solving skills not yet developed.

Indirect Instruction

Advantages Has the advantage of making the student an active learner Learning is something accomplished by the student. Enhances creativity and helps develop problem solving skills.

Disadvantages Take more class time to accomplish learning goals Teacher must give control to students which may initially be uncomfortable More of a challenge involved in making sure students are accomplishing learning tasks.

You Decide As a teacher, I feel it is important to understand that no one way is suitable for all children. Therefore, as teachers we must assess our students, decide which plan of action is best suited to meet their individual needs and put forth action that will enhance the learning experience for all students. It is more important for a teacher to be cautious and ask questions then to assume one method of teaching is best.
