3 HOW DO WE DO IT? 1.Interview key people 2.Review data (hard evidence) 3.Review work products 4.Talk to customers 5.Observe 6.Survey 7.Analyze the results 8.Validate 9.Create a shared and agreed vision for solution (goals etc.)

4 TYPES OF ANALYSIS 1.Organizational needs 2.Performance gap assessment 3.Learner or audience analysis 4.Job, content, task analysis 5.Environmental scan 6.Delivery analysis 7.Cost/benefit analysis

5 ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT 1.What does the organization need?  Clearly defining the problem  Identifying training (or learning) and non-training solutions  Identifying key people  Identify key processes  Identify key practices, values, attitudes 2.Performance Gap Analysis  Identify the gap between current and desired performance  Challenge or opportunity

6 Audience centric analysis  Data collection  Secondary audience (customers, other departments in company, business community)  Relevant personal data about audience (college educated, immigrant population etc.)  Audience’s perception of challenge or opportunity LEARNER ANALYSIS

7 TASK ANALYSIS 1.Job analysis to determine topics, and tasks 2.Task analysis specific skills and knowledge that make up the task 3.Cognitive task analysis task related to decision making, interpretation, problem solving, and judgement

8 ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN Identify trends that may impact your organization  What political, economic, social, trends affect this situation?  What other organization are being impacted?  What solutions in the marketplace already exist that can be used, modified, etc.?

9 DELIVERY ANALYSIS How will this solution be delivered?  Consider content, audience, organization etc.  Consider multiple delivery modes including mentors or coaches  Consider development costs and costs for updating  Consider cost/benefit for implementation

10 COST/BENEFIT ANALYSIS Projected cost of training as compared to the benefits of the improved performance  ROI (return on investment)  Sometimes it is a safety, compliance, or legally mandated training  Will be helpful for projecting costs associated with product development
