 CSM 583 CAPSTONE ADA Compliance: Easy Steps to Get Started with Accessibility By Jeff Statham

Capstone Plan  Obtain a Domain Name and Web Hosting  Create an ePortfolio with Dreamweaver CS6  Create Easy-to-follow Tutorials  Describe Structured Accessible Documents  Define the Proper Use of Alternative Text  Create Multi-media with Captions

Domain & Web Hosting  I searched for the top 10 most affordable and reliable hosting services  Godaddy.com was the company that I chose to purchase my domain and hosting service  The cost for my domain name was $10  The cost for my hosting service was $1.99 per month

ePortfolio  The HTML editing software was Dreamweaver CS6  The software I used for my graphics was Fireworks CS6  Camtasia 2 (Mac version) was my choice for video editing  I created 5 pages: Resume, Portfolio, Capstone, Resources, and Manuscript.

Easy-to-follow Tutorials  Accessible PDF’s  ADA Compliance  Accessible PowerPoint’s  How to Determine If a PDF Contains Readable Text  How to Use Alternative Text in Microsoft Word

Proper Use of Alternative Text  Graphics cannot be seen by everyone, so it is imperative to add descriptive text either within the graphic or on the page near the graphic  I created a blog to post information about accessibility  One post on my blog defines the proper use of alternative text and when and how to implement this feature.

Multi-media with Captions  I used HTML5 coding to link my videos. (This allows the video to be viewed with any browser that is not outdated).  After recording my videos, I used Camtasia to make necessary edits and add captions.  I also have a post on my blog that defines captions and subtitles.

Accomplishments  Designed a website with Adobe Dreamweaver CS6  Acquired a web domain and hosting Service  Created a blog to post discussions about accessibility  Recorded instructional videos and added captions  Provided text-only alternative downloads  Used HTML5 technology for video links  Provided a resource page listing accessibility guides

5 Easy Steps to Accessibility  Contrast  Link Descriptions  Accessible Documents  Alternative Text  Captions

Step 1: Contrast  Choose a background and font color that will provide a good contrast.  This will provide a more accessible document for those who may be color-blind.  Making a better product improves the quality for everyone

Step 2: Link Descriptions  Provide text for headings that accurately describes associated content. This provides a way to scan the page to figure out what is there.  Instead of “For the course schedule, click here,” simply make course schedule the link.

Step 3: Accessible Documents  Use heading levels in HTML, Word, and PowerPoint documents  Heading levels will allow screen readers to easily navigate within the document  When saving a Word document as a PDF, ensure that the “Convert headings to bookmarks” option is enabled

Step 4: Alternative Text  Alternative information is provided in place of images for users who are blind  Everyone may not have the ability to see images. Descriptive text can be alternative text or a textual explanation located near the image.

Step 5: Captions  Caption is the rendering of speech  Captions describe sound effects and other dramatics  Captions increase accessibility for the hearing impaired and also for those whose first language is not English.  I used a program called Camtasia to create captions
