3 Introduction Second Life (SL) is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab that launched on June 23, 2003 and is accessible via the Internet. Linden Lab was established by Philip Rosedale in 1999. Residents of this life are called avatars.

4 Cont.. 80% of active Internet users and Fortune 500 companies will participate in a virtual world by 2011 (Gartner) Growth rate >20% per month(adding 25,000 members per day). Linden Labs is installing 120 servers/week to keep up with growth.

9 Technology Second Life comprises the viewer(also known as the Client) executing on the user's personal, and several thousand servers operated by Linden Lab. Second Life Grid:- the platform and technology behind 3D online virtual world Second Life. LSL(Linden Scripting Language):- Similar to C or Java

10 Residents or Avatars An “avatar” is a digital character that represents you. Avatars can walk, talk, fly, swim, anything you can do. Each participant gets to create their own avatar – tall, short, male, female, buffed or not!

11 Currency in Second Life Second Life has an internal currency, the Linden Dollar(L$). $1 USD = 267 L$ Can be used to purchase clothing, hair, houses, land.. Can run your own business

13 Membership in Second Life A basic membership costs nothing and allows you to create an avatar and look around the world. After basic membership, to buy land, you'll need to upgrade to a premium membership. Premium membership costs $9.95 a month.

15 How to Create Basic Account First, check the system requirements Then, go to http://secondlife.com/ click on Get Started to create an account.http://secondlife.com/ Get Started When you sign up for an account, you create an avatar name and select a generic avatar look, which can later be modified.

16 Cont.. A link will be sent to your provided email address, which will activate your account and direct you to download the software application. You can then log onto Second Life using the avatar name and password that you selected when creating the account.

17 Cont.. When you log onto SL for the first time, you will start at “Help Island.” Here, you will be guided through a tutorial on the basics of using SL, which takes just a few minutes.

20 Walking Walking is the most basic way of movement.

21 Flying A way to get a different perspective on things and navigate quicker than walking.

22 Chat Chatting or Instant Messaging are basic methods of communication.

23 Teen Second Life Teen Second Life is a version of Second Life reserved for teenagers, running on the so- called "Teen Grid." It was officially opened to the public on February 14, 2005 for people aged 13–17 to play Second Life.

26 Disadvantages of Second Life Learning time and training costs. Distractions are numerous. Needs special software download. Fussy about specific computer graphic cards. Needs good broadband connection (not wireless).

27 Cont.. No taste, smell, touch (yet). Avatars convey blank emotions. Terrorism and crime SL addiction
