2 What is the Big6? It is simply an Information Seeking Strategy made up of six basic step! Task Definition Information Seeking Strategies Location and Access Use of Information Synthesis Evaluation

3 Big6 & Thinking Strategies This process is easy if you use the Thinking Strategies you already know about!

4 Task Definition What do you need to do? What is the question or problem? (Questioning) What do you already know about the topic? (Activate your Schema)

7 Task Definition Put it in the form of a question. A GOOD questions requires more than a one-word answer. Space Why? How? When? Where?

8 Information Seeking Strategies Decide where you will look for the information What are the best resources? –Nonfiction books –Encyclopedias –Internet

10 Information Seeking Strategies Make sure the source you choose is reliable and a “good fit.” Is the information current? (check copyright date on back of title page) Is there an Index or Table of Contents? Are there headings or subheadings? Are there pictures and diagrams that are helpful?

11 Location and Access Once you know what type of materials you are going to look in, then you have to find the information within the resource. What KEY WORDS will you use? Use what you know about TEXT FEATURES. –Index –Table of Contents –Bold Print –Headings & subheadings –Captions
