Chapter 12 12.3 Surface Area of Pyramids and Cones

Cone A circular base and a vertex that is not in the same plane as the base.

Right Cone The height meets the base at its center The Slant height is the distance between the vertex and a point on the edge of the base

Theorem 12.5 Surface Area of a Right Cone S is the surface area r is the radius of the base l is the slant height

Find the Slant Height l l 2 = 5 2 + 18 2 l 2 = 25 + 324 l =  349

Find the surface area 1.Find the area of the base 2.Find the slant height 3.Plug into the formula 4.Evaluate S =  (12) 2 +  (12)(20) S = 384  S =  (4.5) 2 +  (4.5)(15.2) S = 88.9  S =  (6.5) 2 +  (6.5)(13) S = 126.75 

Find the surface area of the solid Composed of cube and square based pyramid 1.Find the Surface area of the cube not including the top base first S = B + PlPl 2.Find the Lateral Surface area of the pyramid next S = 0.5Pl 3.Add them together

Find the surface area of the solid Composed of cylinder and a cone 1.Find the Surface area of the cylinder not including the top base first S = B + Ch 2.Find the Lateral Surface area of the Cone next S = rlrl 3.Add them together
