3 3 Flora (Flora is a plant) Sycamore Oak-hickory River maple Mammoth Cave is located in the transitional zone between the open grasslands and drier oak-hickory forests to the west, and the more moist mixed mesophtic forests to the east. It is likewise located transitional between the sub- tropical climates to the south and the colder climates to the north. Many of the plant species found in the park are at the northern, southern, eastern, or western limits of their natural range.

12 The junior ranger program Kids can get a Junior Ranger booklet at the Visitor Center Information Desk, attend ranger- led activities, choose activities in the booklet to earn "bat points," and receive their Junior Ranger badge and certificate at the Information Desk. But don't think it's going to be easy... You've got to use your eyes and ears to gather all the information you need to know. 13 Interesting facts 1.The grease-oil lamp was used to illuminate Mammoth Cave for more than a century. Designed after New England whale-oil lanterns, these lamps used cooking grease to light the way. 2.Mammoth Cave National Park is located in the soft-sloping hills of central Kentucky and, with over three-hundred miles of underground passageways, it is the longest recorded cave system in the world and home to some of nature’s finest masterpieces.

14 Interesting facts continued 3.There are still today remains of mummies in the park 4.Since 1816,Mammoth Cave has been toured 5.Native Americans of the Early Woodland period gathered minerals from Mammoth Cave between 2,000 and 4,000 years ago... no one knows why. Objects they left behind – slippers, cane torches, gourds, and mussel shells – remain perfectly preserved in the cave.
