Find an Essay in a Book Using Sophi Search or the ATLA Religion Database

Where to search 1. Start on the Research Tools page of the library web site 2a. Then use the All tab in Sophi Search to search across all our databases (including ATLA). 2b. OR click “Access EBSCO’s ATLA” under the Databases tab to just search the ATLA Religion Database in EBSCOhost

One of the types of publications indexed in our databases is collections of essays in books. Conduct your search as you normally would up here. To limit the search to essays in books, select “Essay” as the Publication Type Note: Limiting to essays is not available in Sophi Search, but the next slides will show you how to identify books with essays in your search results.

Here is an example of a citation for a book that contains a collection of essays: Note that the publication type is “Book.” In ATLA In Sophi Search

The full record for this book includes a list of the essays that it contains under “Contents.” Here is a partial view: In ATLA In Sophi Search Information on individual essays in the book is listed here.

Each of the essays listed in the contents also has its own citation. Here is the citation for the essay “The space between earth and heaven.” Note that the Publication Type is Essay, because this is one essay in the larger book. The Source is With wisdom seeking God, the book from our first citation. This tells us that the essay by Paulsell can be found on pages 11- 23 of the book. In ATLA In Sophi Search Note: You can tell this essay is not available in full text online because there is no full text PDF or HTML link. On the next slide we’ll see how to search for the print book.

To see if our library has a copy of the print book, you can: Click on “Basic catalog search” to go to the search screen 1. Open the Joint Library online catalog at http://voyager.austinseminary.edu (or click on the link from the library web site)http://voyager.austinseminary.edu OR 2a. Search in the Library Catalog tab of the Sophi Search box. OR 2b. Limit your search in the Sophi Search interface to “Catalog Only”

Do a title search of the book title (not the essay title) by entering the title into the “Search” box with the “Title” field selected. In ATLA In Sophi Search OR

In this case, Stitt Library does have the book! Note that the Status of the book is Not Charged (or Available), which means that the book is not checked out. Write down the full Call Number of the book – you will use it to find the book on the shelf. “APTS Stacks” means the book is at Austin Seminary and not Seminary of the Southwest. In Catalog In Sophi Search

After you have the full call number, you can use the maps on the following slides to locate the BV 4511 section of the library. Note that these maps are also available on the web site!
