4 Common Equine Colors Sorrel – Reddish to Copper Red, mane and tail are usually the same color as the body, mane and tail may be flaxen. Usually used to describe Quarter Horses and Draft Breeds

5 Chestnut Chestnut - Reddish to Copper Red, mane and tail are usually the same color as the body, mane and tail may be flaxen.

6 Bay Bay – Ranges from tan – reddish brown, mane & tail are usually black, lower legs are usually black

7 Brown Brown – Brown – black w/ lighter areas on the body around the muzzle, eyes, and inside of upper legs, most common mane & tail are black

8 Black Black – The body, mane, & tail are uniformly black

9 Palomino Palomino – Golden yellow w/ white mane & tail, no dorsal stripe

10 Buckskin Buckskin – Yellowish – golden w/ black mane, tail, & lower legs

11 Dun Dun – Yellow – Golden w/ black, brown, red, yellow, white, or a combination of colors mane & tail, dorsal stripe, stripes on the legs & over the withers, Have black skin

12 Red Dun Red Dun – Yellow – flesh color w/ red dorsal stripe, mane, & tail

13 Grey Grey – Combination of white, gray, & black hairs, animal will lighten w/ age

14 Roan Blue Roan – Mixture of white & black in the body coat Red Roan – Mixture of white & brown in the body coat Strawberry Roan – Mixture of white & red in the body coat

15 White A true white horse is born white and maintains the same color all through life, has pink skin around the nose & eyes
