2 Chapter VI Reminder As per provisions of regulation I/11, paragraph 1, every master, officer and radio operator holding a certificate issued or recognized under any chapter of the Convention other than chapter VI, who is serving at sea or intends to return to sea after a period ashore, shall, in order to continue to qualify for seagoing service, be required, at intervals not exceeding five years, to: 1- meet the standards of medical fitness prescribed by regulation I/9; and 2- establish continued professional competence in accordance with section A-I/11 of the STCW Code. New paragraph 3 required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards Seafarers qualified in accordance with paragraph 2 in basic training shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standards of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of tables A- VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2. New paragraph 4 Parties may accept onboard training and experience for maintaining the required standard of competence in the areas specified therein. 25 Chapter VI- Part A New requirements Section Transitional provisions A-VI/6 Seafarers with designated security duties 9 Until 1 January 2014, seafarers with designated security duties who commenced approved seagoing service prior to the date of entry into force of this section (1 January 2012) shall be able to demonstrate competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/6-2 by:.1 approved seagoing service as shipboard personnel with designated security duties, for a period of at least six months in total during the preceding three years; or.2 having performed security functions considered to be equivalent to seagoing service required in paragraph 1.1; or.3 passing an approved test; or.4 successfully completing approved training. Seafarers with designated security duties should complete the training as set out in section A-VI/6 at least one time in their career.
