Exploration, encounter, exchange are closely related. Try to find examples of each in your chosen topic, though you should note that some topics will lend themselves to focus mainly on one aspect. You are not required to address all the elements in your project if they are not there. If they are, address them with the depth that they require.

 Can you think of examples where exploration led to unforeseen consequences?  Is there ever a situation where there is exploration and encounter but no exchange?

 Fully research the topic for all three parts of the theme: exploration, encounter, and exchange. You do not have to address them equally in the project, but you need to understand their impact and importance to the topic.  Learn about and explain the correlation between the three parts; that will help you deepen your understanding of your topic.  Look for ideas that are at least 20 years old so that a historical impact and secondary sources can be found.

Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in  Science  Technology  Economics  Education  Society—social and cultural  Government/Politics  Religion  Transportation

 Social Movements  Medicine/Disease  Intellectual theories  Philosophy  Economics  Sports  Medicine  Military Science  Ecology  Court Cases

Think of an exploration. What led up to the necessity of this exploration? Who was mobilized to support it? Who/what did they encounter? How did people view the encounter? What was exchanged in the encounter? Was there a relationship formed? Did it lead to other changes? Where can the influence be seen today?

 What idea, person, or event precipitated the need for exploration?  Who did they encounter and what happened?  What were the effects—new ideas, new laws, new technologies, new cultural standards in the exchange?  What was the end result?  How is it working now?

 Time and place  Cause and effect  Change over time  Impact and significance

 Primary and secondary sources  Analysis of the evidence  Clear explanation of the relationship of the topic to the theme so you can prepare a thesis statement.

 Have the students answer these questions:  My general area of interest:  Preliminary topic idea:  List of issues or questions to be explored in my research:  Am I going to work alone or with a group?
