Ecological, technical, and economic aspects of Bioenergy based on forestry resources UMB-UMN MEETING JUNE 2011 Erik Trømborg, Department of Ecology and natural resource management

NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF LIFE SCIENCES www.umb.no 2 PRESENTATION  Short description of ongoing research projects within bioenergy at the department  Short description of collaborative efforts with UMN

NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF LIFE SCIENCES www.umb.no MAIN ONGOING BIOENERGY PROJECTS AT INA  Optimizing silviculture for bioenergy production in Norway, Ph.D. Scholarship (B. Zeleke), veileder A.Brunner, T. Eid (NFR Natur&næring, 2008-2011)  Second generation biofuel – technology development and impacts on biomass markets (NFR Renergi, B-Solberg, E. Trømborg 2008-2011)  SUP - The future role og biomass energy in Norway – an interdisciplinary technological, economical and environmental research program (NFR OED, B.Solberg 2008-2011)  CenBio – Bioenergy innovation centre (FME, B.Solberg, H.F.Hoen + flere, 2009-2014(17))

NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF LIFE SCIENCES www.umb.no SECOND GENERATION BIOFUELS – TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND IMPACTS ON BIOMASS MARKETS  The objective of this project is to describe and analyse how the future development of second generation biofuels will influence: 1. Costs and biomass input per unit of cellulosic biofuels 2. The potential for production of biofuels in Norway under various market and policy assumptions and under different technology scenarios 3. Price and availability of biomass for production of biofuels, heat and power from Norwegian sources as well as from import under different scenarios. 4. Optimal location of production facilities for biofuels 5. Production of biofuels, bioenergy and forest industrial products under different energy scenarios. 6. Energy planning and design of policy instruments

NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF LIFE SCIENCES www.umb.no Strategic university programme on bioenergy The overall objective of this strategic university-project (SUP) is to build up competence related to interdisciplinary research on bioenergy based on sustainable use of agriculture and forest biomass. The SUP will be a central part of a larger coordinated effort at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) to strengthen interdisciplinary research and teaching within the broader field of renewable energy, and will consist of three main work packages (WP):  WP1: Technology solutions for utilizing biomass for energy production, with focus on enzymatic degradation of lignocellulosic biomass for second generation bioethanol production  WP2: Market feasibility – the impact of increased use of biomass for energy production on biomass markets and forest industries (raw-fiber supply, demand, market dynamics and competition, impacts of policy instruments)  WP3: Environmental impact assessment of alternative types of energy production based on agricultural and forest biomass (Life-cycle assessments (LCA) focusing on impacts on greenhouse gas emission (GHG), net energy production, soil impacts, by-products, biodiversity and land-area utilization).

NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF LIFE SCIENCES www.umb.no COLLABORATION WITH UMN  Work-shop in Norway April 2010 - Doug Tiffany from UMN. Join paper in progress on comparative advantages in pellets production between different countries. Results presented at the European Bioenergy Conference in Berlin last week. Some more papers on the table  Efforts to send a post-doc from UMN to Campus Ås (collaboration with Dean Current)  Some efforts to explore possibilites for joint projects
