What’s the difference? Dental Soft Mechanical Soft Foods are… Soft Moist Bite-sized piece meats Nearly regular texture Foods are… Soft Moist ¼” cubed & ground meats Simple to chew

Vs. Dental Soft Mechanical Milk Products (milk, plain & fruited yogurt, soft cheeses) Cereals (oatmeal, cream of rice, corn flakes, rice crispies, chex & NO raisin bran or shredded wheat) Chopped Hamburger NO bun Chopped Hamburger w/ bun Soft Cooked Veggies (carrots,green beans, broccoli, etc.) ¼”, chopped meat Canned & Soft Fruits (Canned pears/peaches, bananas, applesauce) Bite-sized, chopped meat NO build your own sandwich All Fish & Meatloaf

Renal Diet Foods High in Potassium Foods high in potassium (limit to 1 srv/day) Bananas Oranges Tomatoes Potatoes Prunes Alternatives to offer: apples, peaches, pears, applesauce, fresh fruit cup Cantalope Honeydew Bananas Apricots

8 What does this mean for our menu?
Renal Diet What does this mean for our menu? No potatoes or foods containing potatoes (scrambled eggs & breakfast potato casserole, potato chips) No oranges, orange juice, or orange muffins No prune juice No chicken tortilla or creamy tomato soup No lasagna or any tomato or products containing tomato

9 NAS Vs. Low-Sodium Diet What’s the difference?
NAS diet is limited to 3,000 – 4,000 mg of Sodium per day. Low-sodium diet is limited to 2,000 mg of sodium per day.

Foods to exclude Ketchup (limit to 1 tbsp. per day) Salt packets Salted Crackers Potato Chips Canned veggies & foods (unless marked no added salt) Processed Cheese Full sodium canned soups Pickles Alternatives Mrs. Dash, seasoning packet, hot sauce, pepper Non-salted Crackers Fresh Potato Fresh veggies or canned with no added sodium Swiss or mozzarella, cottage Reduced or NAS soups

11 Low Sodium Diet Foods to Exclude: Alternatives:
Cured or Processed Meats (corned beef, ham, bacon, sausage, lunch meats, hot dogs) Alternatives: Fresh or frozen meats cooked without salt (chicken, turkey bacon or turkey sausage)

Processed cheeses (American, cheese spread) Vegetables: canned, pickled, vegetable juice, potato salad, tomato sauce Alternatives: Swiss or mozzarella cheese Vegetables: canned with no added salt, fresh, sauce with no added salt ALL fruits & fruit juices allowed

Limit mustard or ketchup to 1 tsp/day Snacks: salted popcorn, chips, pretzels, salted nuts, salted crackers, cheese cake Canned Soups Alternatives: Season packet, Mrs. Dash, Tobasco sauce, onion or garlic powder Snacks: unsalted popcorn or pretzels, unsalted nuts, crackers with out salted tops, ice cream, popsicles Sodium reduced soups

14 Renal, Low Sodium, & NAS Diet
Things to Remember: Daily Limits Vs. Meal Limits: When the screen flashes red warning that the sodium or potassium may go above what is recommended for the meal, check previous meals. Renal Diet Sodium: not to exceed 2,050 mg per day total Potassium: not to exceed 2,050 mg per day total Never tell a patient no without offering an alternative
