2 Influences on you… Influence is the ability to sway an opinion, a choice or outcome. Media – various forms of mass communication. Advertisements- paid announcement about a product or service. Commercial- an ad on TV or radio Technology- use of high-tech equipment to communicate information. -ex: computer games: big strong characters internet: ads pop up on websites DVDs: previews for other movies to watch

3 Cont… Culture- the arts, belief, and customs that make up a way of life for a group of people at a certain time.

4 Positive and Negative Does this influence promote healthful behavior?
Does this influence promote safe behavior? Does this influence promote legal behavior? Does this influence promote behavior that shows respect for myself and other? Does this influence promote behavior that follows the guidelines of responsible adults, including my parents or guardian? Does this influence promote behavior that demonstrates good character?

5 Advertisements ..are EVERYWHERE!! Kids cereal – Saturday cartoons
Beer and Cars- football, basketball games, etc. Clothes for teens – Teen magazines Athletic brands- Athletes wear the company logos

6 Ways to evaluate ads What is being advertised?
Where and when did the ad appear? Why was this particular type of media selected? Who appears to be the targeted audience? What advertising appeals are used in the ad? What does the advertiser want me to believe? What do I know to be a fact? Will the product or service in the ad promote health and safety?

7 10 Advertising Appeals Brand Loyalty Appeal- our brand is better than all others False Image Appeal- get a certain image if you use this product Bandwagon Appeal- “everyone is doing it.” Humor Appeal- catchy slogan, jingle or cartoon to “hook” you Glittering generality Appeal- exaggerated appeal to change emotions Scientific evidence appeal- use data and test results to hook you Progress Appeal- “the latest is the best b/c its NEW!” Reward Appeal- special prize or gift Sex Appeal- this brand will make you attractive Testimonial Appeal- famous spokesperson to tell their story of using the product
