Physical and Chemical Properties Chapter 3 Section 1

Matter  Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space  A substance is matter that has a uniform and unchanging composition.  A substance is also known as a pure substance.

Examples of Pure substances  Water is a pure substance because it’s always made of one oxygen and two hydrogens.  Salt is a pure substance because it’s always made of one sodium and one chlorine. www.lenntech.com www.findhealer.com

Substances that aren’t pure  Saltwater is not pure because samples of salt water taken from different locations will have different amounts of salt and water.

Physical properties  A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the sample’s composition.  Ex. Density, color, odor, taste, boiling point, hardness

Extensive and Intensive  Extensive properties are dependent upon the amount of substance present.  Ex. Mass, length and volume depend on the amt present

Extensive and Intensive  Intensive properties are independent of the amt of substance present.  Ex. Density, color and taste do not depend on the amt of substance present

Chemical Properties  A chemical property is the ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances.  Ex. The ability of iron to form rust. www.answers.com

Chemical Properties  The inability of a substance to change into another substance is also a chemical property.  Ex. Iron does not react with nitrogen gas…. This is still a chemical property

Properties of Matter Physical Properties Chemical Properties Extensive Properties Intensive Properties

States of Matter  All matter that exists on Earth can be classified as one of these physical forms called states of matter. exploration.grc.nasa.gov/.../rocket/state.html

Solid  A solid is a form of matter that has its own definite shape and volume. mareltrout.net

Liquid  A liquid is a form of matter that flows, has constant volume, and takes the shape of its container. www.battelle.org

Gas  A gas is a form of matter that flows to conform to the shape of its container and fills the entire volume of its container. www.xaraxone.com
