DEAD DIKES

DEAD DIKES USING DEAD POSTS IS A DAVE DERRICK DISCOVERY (DDD)

DEAD DIKES : Dense rows of large driven dead posts, or trenches filled with posts and/or brush, positioned perpendicular to high flow on floodplain areas to reduce flow velocities, & possibly catch debris, & induce sediment deposition.

WALNUT BROOK, LOCATED IN MINE BROOK PARK, FLEMINGTON, NEW JERSEY FOUR ERODING BENDS WITH SEVERAL HEADCUTS PROJECT CONSTRUCTED JUNE 23 - June 26, 2009

CONSTRUCTION-Looking across @ Dead Dike (DD)posts designed to slow flow in a floodplain high-flow relief channel. CONSTRUCTION-WALNUT BROOK, NJ. PIX BY DERRICK 6-23-2009

CONSTRUCTION-Looking US @ Dead Dike (DD) posts. Concern was that headcutting would occur in this high flow floodplain channel during long-duration, high flow flood events. DD designed to reduce velocities to prevent headcutting. CONSTRUCTION-WALNUT BROOK, NJ. PIX BY DERRICK 6-23-2009

14 Site # 18 – Clark - 7/2002-Removing debris that is choking channel.

15 Site # 18 – Clark - 3/2003, 8 months after construction-Trenches cut on floodway, then backfilled with woody debris from river to slow flow, induce sediment deposition, & induce vegetative growth to make this an ineffective flow area. River is three times as wide as it should be.

16 Site # 18 – Clark 3/2003 - 8 months after construction- close-up of Dead Dike trench

17 Site # 18 - Clark, 6/2006 - 4 years After Construction - well vegetated floodplain bench due to Dead Dikes (DD)
