Games design blogs Mark Potter

The first blog which I found was on Wordpress, it is called “Applied games design” this blog was created by Brenda Brathwaite who is the co-founder of Loop drop which is a social game studio. This blog has many interesting posts from new books which have come out and a list of useful books, to new games and also blogs about programming and other aspects related to games development and design. This blog as discusses social network gaming and how it has developed over the years with the introduction of Facebook and other social networking sites. Shown below:

The next blog related to Computer games design I found was on BlogSpot and was created by Mike Darga who has designed AI simulations and characters. This blog is good because it not only talks about designing games but it gives games designers tips and a list of things to think about when a designer is creating a game, there is also a post which talks about character development and the different types of enemy characters such as enemies that follow the rules, those who don’t and enemies that are the rules (shown below). I learned quite a lot from just reading that one post about character development. Not only does this blog talk about games designing and development it also discusses the games industry and keeps people up to date with what is going on and what people can expect if they where planning on a career in the games industry

The next blog which I found was created by Rob Hale who has worked on games such as Runescape and Warhammer. This blog is very interesting because he posts video’s and other media which show the game/games he is working on at the moment, as well as posting video’s about the project he writes a detailed discussion about what he has been doing on the project and where he is hoping to take it next. He also posts discussions related to the games industry for example “are video games killing the music industry” which was quite interesting to read. Some more posts he writes which are most related to games design are character development and rendering, concept art and level designing both single player and multiplayer which is shown below.

The next blog I found was called “mattmakesgames” this blog mainly focuses on flash games and 2’d online scrolling games, it keeps people up to date with new games which have just been released, it also gives an in-depth insight into how the game was created, what programs were used, how long it took them to make the game and also it gives the reader a chance to see how the game mechanics work. For example a game called “fat wizard” was released and he told the reader that it was created in Flash, how they created the spells which were used and how the enemy AI works. The post is shown below.

I looked at the Rockstar Games LinkedIn page, I didn’t really learn much from it though, the only thing what I learnt was about the company, how it has grown over the last year and who works for Rockstar Games. The only way to learn something on LinkedIn is by looking at the “mentioned in the news” section of page where I found out about the trailer for the new Max Payne game they are planning on releasing.
