5 The Problem There was a king rewarding a peasant girl because she picked up the grains of rice. She can ask for anything she want so she ask for 1 grain of rice on the first day, 2 grains of rice on the second day, 4 grains of rice on the third day and so on. 1.How many grains of rice the girl will get at the end of the 31 days totally? 2. How many grains of rice that the girl will get on each day or on any nth day? 3. How many grains of rice that the girl would have gotten totally on any nth day (cumulative sum on nth day)? (extra credit) 2^(number of days-1) This formula allows you to calculate the total grains on any nth day. Back to [Index]

6 Answer to Problem How many grains of rice that the girl will get at the end of the 31 days totally? 2,147,483,647 grains of rice How many grains or rice that the girl will get on each day or any nth day? The grains of rice that the girl will get on each day or any nth day is going to double the previous amount of grains. How many grains of rice that the girl would have gotten totally on any nth day? 2^(number of days-1) Back to [Index]

7 Describe/Explain your approach and strategy My approach for this story is finding the total amount of rice the girl will get. The equation that I used to find out the total grains without calculating every question is SUM(ABOVE)+1. This is my strategy because I find out the first three amounts of rice the girl will get in three days. Then I plug in the equation for every day to get the amount of rice. SUM(ABOVE)+1 works because its talking about adding the number above and 1 to get the answer. Another equation I used to to find the total amount of rice the girl will get is Number of Days=2^Number of Day-1. You can plug this equation in the formula bar and it will help you find how much grains of rice the girl would get. Using this formula allows you to calculate the amount of grains on any nth day. 9 Method for Microsoft Word It is very difficult to find the amount of rice in Microsoft Word because of the equation. The equation is very hard to figure out. Microsoft Word don’t have the function relative reference which figures out the position of the next cell automatically. Without the function it will be very different to find an equation to match all the information. Also in Microsoft Word you can’t drag the information down like you can in Microsoft Excel. [back to index]

10 Method for Microsoft Excel Microsoft Excel uses an easier method to solve the problem because you can easily put in a formula so you can find the answers, and you can position the next cell not like Microsoft Word. Microsoft Excel have the function relative reference so it is much easier to see the pattern, so I would use the equation to find the others. Microsoft Excel have special features that Microsoft Word does not, like it can find the equation you want very easily. Microsoft Excel helps you find the approach and the different kinds of strategies you could use to find the equation to find the amount of grains the girl would receive. [back to index]
