6 Materials 4 pressure treated 4 x 4’s (10’) 10 pressure treated 2 x 4’s (8’) 20 pressure treated lattice strips (8’) 2 5/4” pressure treated deck boards 2 pressure treated arches 1 pressure treated 1x6 (6’) 2 bottles of weatherproof glue Weatherproof putty 5# deck screws 1# galvanized 8d finishing nails Finishing tools: sandpaper, paint, primer (if needed). 7 The Process Determine the size Construct one side at a time Install side rails (2 x 4) on two corner posts (4 x 4) with mortise & tenon joints. Glue Joints. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved.

8 The Process…continued Countersink holes into the joints. Secure with deck screws. Clamp and allow to dry. Assemble other side. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved.

9 The Process…continued Assemble lattice panels. Make wood channels that will hold the lattice strips. Cut a dado twice as wide and the lattice thickness. Install channels into corner posts and side rails. Secure with deck screws Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved.

10 The Process…continued Cut the lattice long enough to reach each dado bottom from each corner post. Slide strip into channels. Secure with galvanized finishing nails. Consider using a floor. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved.

11 The Arch The arch is complicated and will be purchased from a mill. Assemble the arch. Create tenon joints on top of the four corner posts (to fit mortise joints on the arch). Check for squareness Glue & clamp. Drill and countersink holes for securing with galvanized deck screws. Fill holes with putty. Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. All rights reserved.
