2 In the late 1970’s a strong conservative movement emerged in the Republican Party, partly in response to the dominance of the Democrats since 1932 – The Conservative Coalition was an alliance of business leaders, middle-class voters, disaffected Democrats, and fundamentalist Christians The Moral Majority, an organization made up of evangelical and fundamentalist Christians who interpret the bible literally and believe in absolute standards of right and wrong, played a mjor role – The New Right that gave energy to the movement focused on a number of controversial issues: Opposing abortion Blocking the Equal Rights Amendment Fighting busing Reinstating school prayer Eliminating entitlements (Medicaid, welfare, etc.)
