Pietlock’s Classroom

Highway Safety might actually be one of the most important courses you take in high school. Getting a license and driving is the number 1 responsiblility that you take on as a young adult. Car accidents are the number 1 killer of kids in your age group. My goal is to just to get you to understand and think about what you are doing when you drive and to drive a little safer.

Driving Basics DUI Science of Driving Rules of the Road IPDE Process Driving in Bad Weather Drowsy Driving Speeding DMV manual Many more

Each day you should have the following: A. Writing instrument—I have a limited supply but am not a pen or pencil store. If you have to borrow a pen or pencil, you are responsible for giving it back. B. Folder. Need something to take notes and hold assignments. C. Willingness to learn. Not every topic we cover will fascinate you but every topic will have a lesson worth learning and you must be willing to give it a chance.

We will follow the school rules regarding absences and work; you will be given time to complete any assignment you miss. However, IT IS NOT MY JOB TO COME FIND YOU AND GIVE YOU YOUR MISSED WORK. I have about 150 total students and cannot be responsible for your missing work.

You may hand in your work late in this class; I do not believe in burying you for 1 mistake or 1 bad night. There is a deduction for each day the assignment is late and it is as follows: 1 day late—10%--example—40 point assignment/only receive 36 points* 2 days late—25%--32 out of 40* 3 days or more—50%--20 out of 40* THERE WILL BE ASSIGNMENTS IN WHICH THERE IS NO FORGIVENESS AND A ZERO WILL BE PUT IN IMMEDIATELY. 6 *Deduction will be for late/can still lose points for wrong answers.

I try to promote an active and upbeat classroom; THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT I PROMOTE CHAOS. Basic Procedures: 1. In seat when bell rings. 2. Do not crowd the door at end of class; stay seated or near your desk. 3. If door is closed when you get to class, you are late. 4. Always ask permission to go to bathroom. Basic Rules: 1. No talking while I am talking. 2. Do what you are asked to do when you are asked to do it. 3. Save your complaints for someone else—you have entered a complaint free zone. No cheating on test, quizzes, or assignments. No food or drink.

Everything that we do in this class will receive a grade. The amount of points an assignment is worth depends on its difficulty. Power School will be updated at least once a week and you can check your grade on it. You will be graded on the following: Do Nows Written Work Projects Quizzes Tests

There will be opportunities for extra credit. Each test will have an extra credit session. Some extra credit will be non-academic and some will be school work. To be eligible for extra credit, you must NOT be missing any assignments or work. If you need extra credit in Highway Safety, we all need to start praying while you are driving.

Any grade marked a “zero” are not final until the end of the quarter. When an assignment is due and you did not turn it in, a “L” will be put in the grade book. That “L” will turn into a zero after 3 days. I will put a zero in the grade book to call your attention that you are missing work. After the zero is in the grade book, you can receive no more than 50% on the assignment.

Textbook must be signed out. There is a sign out sheet on my desk. To sign a book out, you must put: 1. your name 2. the date 3. the book number Books can not be signed out for more than 3 nights.

There is a black tower on the cart on the wall to your left. All Highway Safety work goes into the top slot of the tower. The tower will be emptied each day to ensure that things are graded and work is not stolen.

Each unit’s assignments will be posted on my wiki page. A copy of each assignment for the unit will also be posted; I will not carry around a lot of extra copies of assignments. You will receive one and if you lose it, you must get it from the wiki page. My wiki address is http://pietlock.wikispaces.com/. You can access the site from the staff section of the high school web page.http://pietlock.wikispaces.com/

If cell phones are out, they are not to be used. Ipads should only be used when instructed to do so. I will ask once to either put away stop using. 2 nd time and every time after, I will confiscate the item. There should never be a time when you are messaging, videoing, or talking on your phone/Ipad.

Permission will NOT be granted to leave the room during the following times: Direction instruction(Example-note taking/lecture) Group Discussion/Whole Class Activity Video/Film Any time it will be a disruption to what we are doing.

We will be moving from Wiki to Blackboard during the school year. My hope is that we can get to a paperless classroom or pretty close to it by June. I plan to have test, quizzes, written assignments, and discussion questions on the site. It will take some time but that is my goal.

The year will move quicker than you think it will today. Before you know it, it will be done; in the meantime, there is work to be done. Your grade will be determined by your effort and attitude; if you want to do well, you will.
