2 Early Life/Influences Jane Addams Mother Teresa Born September 6, 1980 Grew up in the United States Second youngest of nine children Had health problems that limited her ability to do much activity as a child Had older siblings Had a parent die when she was young Encouraged greatly by a parent to pursue goals Traveled to different countries in order to accomplish goals Developed strong leadership skills Attended Rockford Female Seminary Received bachelor’s degree Began studying medicine Born August 26, 1910 Grew up in Macedonia Youngest of three children Was a member of the youth group at her parish called Sodality Felt a strong call from God at age 12 Knew she was going to be a missionary Received First Communion when she was five and a half and was confirmed in November of 1916

3 Accomplishments/Findings/Beliefs Jane Addams Mother Teresa Wanted to help people in need Worked in the slums Determined to help Very kind and generous Won a Nobel Peace Prize Created the Hull House Became first vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association Campaigned for Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party Wrote a few books Appointed to Chicago’s Board of Education and made chairman of the School Management Committee Became first woman president of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections President of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom until 1929 Made initial vows to become a nun on May 24, 1931 Started a school for slum children Established Missionaries of Charity Sisters reached 4,000 members Strong feministHad strong Catholic beliefs 610 foundations established in 123 countries Won the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 Established Missionary of Charity Brothers and Fathers

4 Affect on History/Legacy Jane AddamsMother Teresa Very important to future work in the slums Encouraged others to establish foundations like theirs Two of the most famous female activists/reformers Remembered as first social worker Helped to establish several social service centers like the Hull House in Chicago today Remembered for helping to improve life for females Her tomb almost immediately became a popular spot of pilgrimage and prayer for all people. Society of missionaries that she started have spread all over the world Became one of the most significant symbols of compassion to the world
