3 Kenya Great Rift Valley stretches from southeast Africa to Red Sea Mt. Kenya is a volcano that is 17,058 feet high Fossils of early human ancestors found here that are about 4 million years old

4 Kenya’s Economy Free enterprise system – people can start and run businesses with limited government involvement Good transportation and communication systems have encouraged foreign companies to set up regional headquarters here

5 Kenya Most are poor Farmers grow plants like cassava, a plant whose roots are ground to make porridge Large farms grow tea and coffee for export Tourism is a fast- growing industry

6 Kenya’s History and Government Official languages are English and Swahili (African blended with Arabic) British colonized in 1920 Took land and started coffee and tea farms Tribes, like Mau Mau, fought them for independence Mau Mau warriors

7 Kenya Today 1/3 live in cities 40 ethnic groups Kikuyu are the largest and make up 25% Harambee (pulling together) has led groups to build schools and clinics

9 Tanzania’s Economy 80% farm or herd Important crops include coffee and sisal (a plant fiber used to make rope and twine) Cloves are used to flavor ham

10 Tanzania’s Economy Tourism is fastest growing industry Habitat - type of environment in which a particular animal species lives Serengeti National Park covers 5,600 square miles Ecotourists – people who travel to another country to view its natural wonders Preserving farmland, planting trees

11 Tanzania’s History and Government 1964 – Zanzibar and Tanganyika united to form Tanzania Socialist government in 1960s Free enterprise in 1990s Democratic elections recently

12 Tanzanian Culture 120 ethnic groups Most speak Swahili Main religions are Christianity and Islam Music and dance are important
