2 California Gold Rush The gold rush began on January 24, 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter Mill in Colona, California. News of the discovery brought 300,000 people to California. 50% by sea (Latin America, China, Australia and Europe) and 50% by land (Eastern/Midwest U.S.)

4 Effects of the Gold Rush Gold worth billions of dollars in today’s money was discovered. The majority of people returned home with nothing. Intense gold mining caused environmental damage. Asian-Americans and Native-Americans were forced off of their land. California grew from a small settlement to a huge state. Officially became a state in 1850.

9 “America the Story of Us: Westward” We will now watch another episode from the series: America the Story of Us. It will cover the topic of Westward Expansion as well as the advantages/disadvantages of relocating west. Answer the questions on your OWN sheet of paper!

11 As the population was increasing and moving west, more people left the farms and moved to the cities. This also caused an increase in factories. Due to population and industry growth, transportation needed to improve. Roads, turnpikes, canals, and train tracks all increased to make transportation easier. Not only could Americans travel all throughout the U.S., but it also made importing and exporting goods easier.
