Teaching Resources & Strategies Computer with Internet access connected to LCD projector for instructor One computer with Internet access per student; only one half of the class will receive instruction at a time Lecture, demonstration, and observation by instructor Active listening and hands-on practice by students; questions on a handout will be answered at the end of class

4. Expanded Academic ASAP “From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers – many with full text and images!” Expanded Academic ASAP has 13,815,443 articles as of December 2, 2006.

5. Types of Searches Search TypeDescription Basic Search using the “Subject” option Searches for documents about a particular topic; especially useful as you begin your research. Basic Search using the “Keyword” option Searches key fields, including titles, introductory text, authors, and subject terms. Searches a broader range of fields than a search by subject. Basic Search using the “Entire Document” option Searches the entire text of all documents in the database you are searching, as well as in the fields of information included in the Keyword search. Good search to use if looking for a particular line of text or an unusual phrase. Subject Guide Search Browses a hierarchical list of subject terms (known as the Subject Guide), allowing you to select topics, subdivisions, and related subjects. Publication Search Searches for periodical titles, showing information about each publication and allowing you to drill- down to select a specific volume or issue. Advanced Search Allows you to build as simple or complex a search expression as you want by selecting specific areas of the database to search, known as indexes. You can even build new searches based on previous searches.

16. Evaluation of Student Learning After instructor’s presentation, students will complete handout questions in which searching strategies demonstrated in the presentation are utilized. Example of handout question: Locate a full-text article in which “avian flu” appears in the title, and limit your results to the last six months. Cite the article’s information. Instructor will observe students’ searching techniques to evaluate their understanding.

17. Follow-Up/Further Training An additional practice session during class or after school may be offered. Students will once again use the database when visiting the library to research the current events paper for English class.
