2 What is the Information Resource Center? The Information Resource Center is a special library that was established after the closure of the USIS Hong Kong Library (American Library) in 1995. It is a virtual library that provides electronic services such as reference, electronic books, videos, and databases. It introduces to the local population to American history, government, society, and values. It is the primary source of informed commentary on the origin, growth and development of U.S. society, politics, economics, and culture.

3 Roles of the Information Resource Center Director Manages the Information Resource Center. Collects and distributes educational, cultural and other U.S.- related information for both internal and external users. Liaises with local libraries and educational institutions. Coordinates with partner institutions to promote U.S. culture and education. Provides research support to U.S. Consulate educational and cultural programs. Promotes the use of U.S. government-produced educational and cultural materials among the public.

4 Qualifications Education: University degree in information science, library science, political science, international affairs, or American studies is required. A master’s degree in any of these fields of study is desirable. Prior Work Experience: Four to six years of progressively responsible experience in the field of information research. This includes experience in traditional research and reference services, and in the use of emerging technologies and electronic resources. One to two years management and supervisory experience.

5 Skills Knowledge: Good knowledge of U.S. reference and resource materials and of current trends and developments in American and host country information science and technology. Knowledge of electronic retrieval and delivery tools, in particular the Internet and standard information science practices and procedures. Skills and Abilities Good interpersonal, and cross cultural skills. Ability to carry out reference searches and respond rapidly to complex requests: to work effectively with American and local staffs; to independently plan, organize, and carry out assigned responsibilities; and good written and oral communication skills.
