3 Background - the changing job market for young Londoners

4 What happened to school leaver jobs? Supporting young people’s services 1980s Recession and certainty of school work ends Most ‘school leaver jobs’ ask for few skills or qualifications Mid 1990s Competition from adults for what used to be thought of as ‘junior’ jobs More young people staying in education at 16 2014 Even entry level jobs expect people to be ‘job ready’ and have ‘soft skills’ (eg communication, team work) Expansion of apprenticeships

5 London jobs mismatch Employers and education want the same young people but increasingly difficult for low skilled and/or qualified Londoners to find jobs that meet their needs and expectations  ‘jobs mismatch’ in UK cities as low skilled jobs move out  ‘job ready’ very similar to education ready – attitude and behaviour, soft skills, literacy & numeracy  Catch 22 16-18: Employers often find difficulty attracting suitable school/college leavers in London, while those who want work (rather than full-time education) often struggle to find it Supporting young people’s services

8 Weekly Opportunities Bulletin  Aimed at advisers working with young people in Central London – not aimed directly at young people  Not aiming to be 100% comprehensive but pointing in the right direction and helping start the process.  Immediate opportunities  Mainly focusing on opportunities for NEET young people (eg employability courses) now, but shifts towards education leavers closer to summer Supporting young people’s services

9 Weekly Opportunities Bulletin  Not a course listing and not attempting to replicate Find an apprenticeship  Draws out a few interesting examples each week from Find an apprenticeship  Also links larger employers and learning providers – many will have contacted us directly asking to circulate vacancies  Aimed at advisers working with young people in Central London – not aimed directly at young people  Links to events and other resources Supporting young people’s services

10 Employability Course Guide  A valiant attempt to list all training in London that aims to help young people develop skills they need to get a job  Does not cover organisations that:  offer advice and guidance only  offer voluntary work only  offer lifeskills training only  offer English and maths courses only  All London (rather than Central London/CLC area) to support CLC workforce development training  A ‘living’ directory – new courses will start and other will close and advisers can email details/leads to CLCinformation@rbkc.gov.ukCLCinformation@rbkc.gov.uk Supporting young people’s services
