User Interface Status (May 07) Status of the UKCIP08 User Interface: May 2007 UKCIP08 User Panel, 3 rd May 2007 Ag Stephens, British Atmospheric Data Centre (http://badc.nerc.ac.uk)http://badc.nerc.ac.uk

User Interface Status (May 07) To talk about Status report User interface questionnaire Current user interface Interactions with Users’ Panel Output formats Plans

User Interface Status (May 07) Current Status Requirements Capture phase complete …but much still to be finalised. Design and Basic Prototyping phase will involve: –Honing the requirement –Designing the architecture –Developing prototypes (Back-end and Portal) –Data transfer/management. You can see what we are doing on our web site.

User Interface Status (May 07) Questionnaire Review Main points from the questionnaire were: 21 people responded Plot configuration: –change the limits of the X and Y axes on a plot –colour map issues are important. Graphics formats: Acrobat (pdf), Postscript (ps), Portable Network Graphics (png) and Jpeg (jpg) Single selection page: Users would clearly prefer (78.9%) to be able to make selections all at once.

User Interface Status (May 07) Questionnaire Review Browsers: IE6, IE7 and Firefox to be supported. Data types: –Sample probabilistic data (26.3%) –Time series (31.6%) Data formats: –CSV format important - what about metadata? –And Shape files – for GIS applications. Users: broad user base including communicators, decision-makers, consultants and resource managers. See: http://proj.badc.rl.ac.uk/dcip/wiki/UkcipDdp/Docs http://proj.badc.rl.ac.uk/dcip/wiki/UkcipDdp/Docs and download the questionnaire doc.

User Interface Status (May 07) Latest interface Login page: Starts a session logging time, date, session id, username etc.

User Interface Status (May 07) Main Page Toolbar Drag objects Drop containers Map container Bounding Box Image map with selectable regions Submit query Context menu

User Interface Status (May 07) Output page Toolbar – persistent on all pages Query output stored in XML Toolbar to edit query or save data Panel to offer controls to change parameter selection Context menu - persistent but changing.

User Interface Status (May 07) Levels of guidance Increasing amount of detail Dynamically created from XML, XSLT and PHP (will feed “all” guidance pages) More Info… links to next level of detail Easy to add more levels to XML doc

User Interface Status (May 07) UP Interactions How can our project work most productively with the Users’ Panel? Early on: General ongoing feedback Throughout: Decisions on specific details Towards launch: System testing

User Interface Status (May 07) Colour Maps Issue Proposed way forward with colour maps: 1.Define a set of colour ranges. 2.Define default values for each variable: High limit Low limit Climate change values Absolute values

User Interface Status (May 07) Output Formats Users will want to know what the output formats will look like. We will: 1.Publish a specification of the formats (before launch). 2.Provide example files for you to download. Given the desire for CSV format, how do you feel about metadata loss?

User Interface Status (May 07) Roger will introduce plans for involving the Users’ Panel in a review of the prototype system. Find out more about our project at: http://proj.badc.rl.ac.uk/dcip/wiki/UkcipDdp http://proj.badc.rl.ac.uk/dcip/wiki/UkcipDdp
