Overview Estate Owned by: Vista del Sur Wine Region: Mendoza Winemaker: Jose Rodrigo Calatayud

Location Vista del Sur is a state-of-the-art winery high in the Andes foothills of Argentina’s famed Uco Valley of Mendoza. Ranging in altitude from 3,700 to 5,000 feet Vista del Sur’s vineyards are among the highest in the world Intense desert sunlight, very cool nightly temperatures, low humidity and dry, sandy soil with excellent drainage provide the fruit with extended hang times that result in a slow, balanced ripening cycle with good acidity and concentrated flavors without excessive sugar. These conditions also help reduce vine disease and provide a long, dry growing season producing low yields of small grapes with concentrated flavor, color and tannins.

History High Note Elevated Malbec was born out of Click Wine Group’s belief that Argentinean Malbec will be the next sought-after varietal and region for U.S. consumers. While touring top wineries in Argentina, Peter Click met Laura Catena, an expert in the Argentinean wine industry. Laura introduced Peter to winemaker Fernando Buscema and Vista del Sur Winery where she is an investing partner. Both were convinced that the expertise at Vista del Sur, coupled with Click Wine Group’s successful history of developing and launching brands that connect with consumers, would be a winning combination for the production of Malbec.

Philosophy Altitude is everything. Altitude is essential to providing the vineyards with intense sunlight and cool temperatures. This perfect paradox allows winemakers to craft an expressive quality driven Malbec.

The Winery Vista del Sur was designed from vine to bottle to enhance the quality of the Malbec it produces. Vista del Sur employs specially designed small tronco-conic tanks exclusively for the production of Malbec. – The tops of the tronco-conic tanks are tapered and smaller in diameter than the bottoms. This unique shape increases the contact between the juice and the skins during fermentation and maceration and assists in the efficient extraction of sweeter tannins. – The design allows the grape cap to wedge into the upper part of the tapered shell. As the wine is racked, or drained, out of the tanks, the cap falls and loosens. When the wine is returned to the tank, the broken cap is easier to re-submerge. The improved contact between the wine and cap reduces the maceration time, compared to traditional tanks, and allows more extraction of soft tannins from the skin and less extraction of bitter tannins from the seeds. The result is a wine with well integrated, more concentrated flavors and a smooth, velvety texture.

The Vineyards The grapes for High Note are sourced from four vineyards with sandy loam soils, ranging in elevation from 3,700 feet to 5,000 feet above sea level. Vistaflores vineyard has flavors of spices, red fruits, and minerality. La Consulta vineyard adds black fruit and mid-palate weight. The Altamira vineyard’s fruit has notes of violets. The Gualtallary vineyard, at the highest altitude, brings deep purple color, additional floral and black fruit notes balanced with acidity.

Winemaker Fernando Buscema A fourth-generation winemaker whose early childhood memories are set in his grandfather’s vineyards. Earned his bachelor's degree in enology and food science from the Universidad Maza in Mendoza, where he graduated top of his class. His winemaking experience was gained through his work at reputable wineries all over the world including Vicenza, Italy; Napa Valley, California; and Mendoza, Argentina. At Vista del Sur, Buscema is devoted exclusively to Malbec where he remains at the forefront of oenological research and development.
