3 American Heritage and People in Societies Students will discuss when the first Native Americans came to the new land. Students will create a time line to show the different tribes of the Native Americans Students will learn how the Native Americans were forced to move west.

4 Students will discuss what tribes still exist today. Students will write about where their family came from.

6 People In Societies Students will be introduced to the Native American Culture in general. Students will learn why the Native Americans place so much emphasis on clothing, beads, and jewelry. Students will create their own beaded necklaces and explain why it is symbolic to them.

7 Students will discuss the ways that Native Americans are similar to themselves and write a paragraph about the similarities. Students will discuss the differences about the Native Americans and themselves and create a Venn diagram to show both the similarities and differences.

9 World Interactions Students will write letters to their Native American pen pals. Students will write a report on the Native Americans’ first Thanksgiving. Students will compare their Thanksgiving with the Native Americans’ first Thanksgiving.

10 Students will work in small groups and research the ways the Native Americans hunted for food, respected one another, and what their houses were like when they first came to America. Students will make theme signs for the different native tribes.

12 Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities Students will learn about the Native American ceremonies and dances and discuss why they are important to the natives. Students will talk about the meaning of the dominant five colors that the Native Americans use: red, white, black, green, and yellow. Students will be able to paint their faces using these colors.

15 Democratic Processes Students will use a story starter to tell about Thanksgiving Students will research ways that the Natives become ceremonial and tribal leaders. Students will compare and contrast the differences of decision making between the Natives and Americans.

18 Decision Making and Resources Students will discuss the ways the Native Americans still have their own unique culture. Students will pick one tribe and write and illustrate a story about the particular tribe. Students will use a map and locate the different states that the Natives reside.
