2 2 EIT – mission & concept _[mission:] To contribute to sustainable European economic growth and competitiveness by reinforcing the innovation capacity of the Member States and the EU… business/ innovation higher education research _[concept:] … by promoting and integrating higher education, research and innovation of the highest standards (= the knowledge triangle)  People are at the heart of innovation

3 3 _currently three KICs in the following areas of societal challenges: _sustainable energy (‘KIC InnoEnergy’), _climate change adaptation and mitigation (‘ClimateKIC’) _future information and communication society (‘EIT ICT Labs’) EIT operations – KICs

4 4 Strategic Innovation Agenda (SIA) = strategic long-term document on the future of the EIT SIA must be a proof of concept document, which defines inter alia: _long-term priority fields (societal challenges) _governance _funding model 4 Next steps - SIA

5 5 Next steps – SIA SIA amended EIT regulation Impact Assessment ‘package’ from COM to Council and EP 12/2011 draft SIA by EIT independent evaluation stakeholder consultation CSF for research and innovation

6 6 Input & context – SIA draft SIA by EIT independent evaluation stakeholder consultation submitted on 15 June published on 31 May closed on 30 June

7 7  The focus of the EIT for the period 2011-2014 should be on consolidation and delivery  The EIT should continue in its current format for the next MFF and expand incrementally  The EIT should continue to focus on strengthening existing centres of excellence  Future calls for KICs should include clear and consistent guidance as to EIT expectations  The EIT must develop a robust monitoring system in association with the KICs Evaluation - recommendations (1/2)

8 8  The development of an EIT ‘brand’ remains at an early stage and should be strengthened  The EIT should continue to develop its own practices in key areas, particularly around the simplification agenda  The operational leadership of the EIT should be reclaimed by the EIT HQ, under the strategic guidance of the Governing Board (GB)  The EIT should embrace a culture of openness and external engagement through which it can develop and share lessons of practice Evaluation - recommendations (2/2)

9 9  134 replies received, including 46 position papers;  Good participation of the business community  Preliminary main messages: –Broad endorsement of the EIT concept –Need to tangibly demonstrate EIT’s added value –Flexibility is key for business involvement –Enhance dissemination and outreach across the EU Open consultation – preliminary results
