A new wine from Chile

Valle de Colchagua 120 miles to the south of Santiago de Chile, lies the Valle de Colchagua where the best conditions of soil and climate are combined with human skill to produce the finest red wines. Vines were first planted in the volcanic soil a hundred years ago, and fine wines such as Sacromonte, Lapostolle, Apalta and Santa Laura come from the commune of Santa Cruz which is where Los Celtas’ vineyard is situated. Colchagua is being developed for visitors in much the same way as Napa Valley, and a steam railway is to take tourists round the vineyards.

Colchagua’s Qualities Colchagua is ideal for fine wines because Its clayey soil is rich with volcanic salts blended with pure uncontaminated vegetable matter Its altitude and temperate climate combine to optimize the sunlight necessary for the timely maturing of grapes Rainfall and wind patterns, helped by the protection of the coastal mountain range, favor the development of vines The significant daily variation in temperatures is perfect for healthy grape production giving a balance between alcohol, acidity and intense aroma in the final product

Distinguished Company From the 1980s some of the world’s great winemakers settled in Colchagua to exploit the outstanding conditions. Alone, or with Chilean partners, they have increased the region’s know- how and prestige. In the 1990’s, D Jaime Munro started to invest to create a world class vineyard on his estate in Santa Cruz Casa Lapostolle (Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle, France) Viña Caliterra (Robert Mondavi, USA & Viña Errazuriz, Chile) Miguel Torres (Spain)

The Munro Family The name “Los Celtas” refers to the founders’ Scots pedigree. The grandfather of the present chairman, D Jaime Munro, reached Chile from Inverness in the North of Scotland. The family has long been involved in agriculture, and is well known in Chile for racehorse-breeding. From horses to grapes might seem a long stride, but the Munros appreciate all the good things that a beneficent soil and careful husbandry can bring. The family motto, visible in English on the label, is “Dread God”; the family believes, however, as well as offering respect to the Almighty, it is good to enjoy His blessings.

The Wines The family vineyard is constituted as Viña Agricola Maria Ines Ltda, and has been carefully planted in the clayey soil to ensure perfect spacing and light The strength of the Valle de Colchagua is the red wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. But fine Merlots, Carmenères and Chardonnays are also available, and many discerning consumers prefer them The following are offered: Merlot2001 Carmenère 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Chardonnay 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2001 All in 750 ml bottles, 12 to a case
