The “T” stands for TEAM!
Developed by Nancy Osterhaus,
BIST (Behavior Intervention Support Team) provides a framework and language for all school personnel to help students manage their own behavior and become successful in three major life goals.

3. BIST LIFE GOALS
I can take good care of myself even if I am mad or overwhelmed by emotion.
I can be productive and follow directions even if I don’t want too.
I can be okay, even when others are not okay.

4. Teacher BIST Talk
“I see you are having trouble putting your things away.
Can you put your things away now
Even though you don’t want to?
I’m so glad you chose to be a NOW kid!
What we just did:
Identified the gateway behavior.
Friendly reminder of the needed behavior.
Named the missing skill.
Added positive reinforcement.

5. BIST FRAMEWORK
Students are accountable for the wellbeing of their community. If their actions become hurtful or disruptive, we may need to -
Ask the student to move to the SAFE SEAT.
Ask the student to move to the BUDDY ROOM.
Ask the student to move to EXTRA SUPPORT setting, such as the office.
Teachers communicate expectations with the student throughout the BIST process.

6. GATEWAY BEHAVIORS
Gateway behaviors are small things that can snowball into something big, such as:
Eye rolling
Whispering, when at Level 1 (no talking)
Being disruptive in the hallway
Laying their head on their desk
Ignoring a greeting
Anything that disrupts learning in the classroom

7. B.I.S.T is process of…. Offering grace and accountability
Protection rather than punishment
When students need our help
in reaching the goals for life.

If your child is having problems meeting these goals at school we WILL contact you.
You can help your child learn these life skills by:
Helping them take ownership of their behavior
Helping them accept consequences for their actions
Helping them make a plan to fix the problem
