1 Lesson 11 It is estimated that 6% of teens have depression. What do you think are symptoms of depression? Who can you talk to if you or someone you know is depressed?

2 Who gets depression? anyone

3 Symptoms of depression Depressed mood Change in appetite Thoughts of death Inactivity Agitation Difficulty concentrating Feelings of worthlessness or guilt Chronic fatigue Anxious Over sleeping Insomnia- not sleeping Weight loss Weight gain Loss of pleasure Restlessness Irritability Headaches or stomachaches that don’t respond to treatment

4 Lesson 11 What kinds of treatment are there for people with depression? Physical examination/ evaluation Therapy Medication

5 What strategies are there for coping with depression? Talk to parent, guardian, mentor, or other trusted adult Stay connected with friends Practice healthy behaviors- eating healthy, exercising Use anger management skills Practice stress management skills Avoid alcohol and other drugs Be resilient Seek treatment if depression last more than two weeks

6 What else can you do? Write in a journal Take medication on time Get plenty of sleep Don’t over do it

7 How can you be resilient? Work on relationships with family members Develop a close relationship with a mentor Choose friends who are supportive Deal with your feelings in difficult situations- don’t put them off Avoid harmful behaviors as a way to cope Ask for support Join a support group Be involved in school activities Practice healthful behaviors Volunteer
