2 Center for Social and Economic Research Competitiveness - the CASE project funded under the 5th Framework Programme BACKGROUND äThe role of competitiveness in economic growth, structural change, specialization and economic integration is commonly recognized by the EU (  Luxembourg Process) and by the scientific community äHowever studies on integration have, up to now, not paid sufficient attention to the role of changes in competitiveness in the process of integration (instead focus on redistribution, the CAP etc.)
