Overview Estate Owned by: The Zenato family Wine Region: Veneto Winemaker: Alberto Zenato Total Acreage Under Vine: 175 Estate Founded: 1960 Winery Production: 2,000,000 Bottles

Location The winery is located in San Benedetto di Lugana, about 15 miles west of Verona. Its location on the Veneto side of Lake Garda affords it an extremely favorable microclimate. It comprises 175 acres, in the best vineyard sites of Lugana and in the Valpolicella Classico.

Location Lugana – Soil: consists of a variety of compact stratified clays with sedimentations dating back to the period after the last ice age. – “Lugana” derives, quite probably from the Latin “lucus”, wood.

Location Valpolicella – Means “valley of many cellars” – Valpolicella is a succession of gently rolling hills and little valleys between the Adige river and Lake Garda, with the Lissinia mountains to the north and Verona and the Adige to the south. – The climate is tempered by the nearby lake and protected by the Monti Lessini.

History Sergio and Carla Zenato founded the winery in 1960 Originally, the family estate was in Lugana but soon after they started, they added holdings in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone. Zenato has been at the forefront of the Amarone revival and the renaissance of Veronese wines in general.

History Today the winery is run by their children Nadia and Alberto, who continue the family tradition with great success and recognition. Zenato production remains well below the maximum allowed by regulations, in order to bring out the very best of the grape by working the vineyards with absolute care and discipline.

Philosophy The Zenato family motto is Quality, Passion & Tradition. Each bottle of Zenato wine brings this to life: the grapes are grown with strict quality standards, chosen and blended with the personal passion of the family, and respect the land and its traditions.

Family Sergio’s energy, ambition and knowledge live on today in his wife Carla and their children Alberto and Nadia, who have reinforced and expanded the success of the project.

Key Selling Points 1.Zenato’s reputation was build and is maintained by the quality and consistency of their wines at multiple price points, and at quantities that provide market stability. 2.Visible leader in the Lugana category, dedicated to promoting the DOC and maintaining high quality. 3.Ripassa Valpolcella, first produced in 1967, is historically and commercially critical to the category and to the winery 4.Amarone, both in the Classico and Riserva forms, are wines that define their category, and consistently score at the top of the lists in all major press reviews.

Building The Brand 1.Position Pinot Grigio with well considered pricing strategy within the crowded category. 2.Lugana is a unique opportunity to “Own” a category. Should be positioned as a richer rounder Italian white – perhaps alternative to unoaked Chardonnay 3.Valpolicella target to Italian focused accounts on premise for BTG 4.Ripassa has broad appeal, should be built on pedigree and press as well as market reputation for both on and off premise 5.Amarone target for top restaurant accounts and fine wine retail.

Variations on the Valpolicella theme 1.Base wine (Corvina, Molinara, Rondinella) vinified dry in September 2.Same blend, but select, healthy grapes only, hand-picked; grapes are dried until between Dec – Feb and then fermented 3.Base wine combined (ripasso=repassed) over the lees of Amarone, residual sugars and yeasts trigger a second alcoholic fermentation. The result is a more intense wine with higher alcohol. 4.Basically an Amarone process but begin grapes much higher sugar concentration, fermentation ceases naturally (cold and alcohol kills yeasts) with residual sugar in wine 1. Valpolicella 2. Amarone 3. Ripasso 4. Recioto

Amarone Amarone can be made only in the historical Valpolicella region Because the water has evaporated, the sugars and flavors are very concentrated, which results in a wine of great richness, depth and concentration. Hallmark aromas of an Amarone include dried plums, currants, sweet spice, mocha, coffee and more.

Amarone Process Amarone = same base blend as Valpolicella – Corvina, Rondinella and other approved varieties – Grapes are harvested and left to dry for 4-5 months – Grapes are pressed and vinified dry; resulting wine is much more robust – Minimum alcohol level of 14% required

Lugana Brut DOC 100% Trebbiano di Lugana After the wine has matured for 18 months in bottle, they are placed on the pupitres, clarified by riddling, remuage, and then the deposit is removed by dégorgement.
