Session Report 6.1.1 www.iowater.org I Badra KAMALADASA Daniel VALENSUELA

Session 6.1.1 Knowledge for All, All for Knowledge www.iowater.org I Issues related to knowledge management and development, ın partıcular the approaches whıch ensure scıentısts to workıng on the prıorıty ıssues from the ground and approprıate systems for sharıng and makıng newly gaıned knowledge avaılable

GAPS, CONSTRAINTS … www.iowater.org I Communication Issues Terminology by scientist too difficult for applications problematic Lack of data (e.g., ecosystem service) Languages: Need translation in local languages

GAPS, CONSTRAINTS … www.iowater.org I Communication Issues(contd) Language issue (different concepts for different communities –scientists, practitioners, public…) Policy makers want simple facts and figures, not too complicated. Lack of accessibility to internet) No feedback / loops for a continuous knowledge process

Other Observatıons..... www.iowater.org I Middle-manager horizon: short-term, solution/problem -oriented and pressure from ‘above’ (delay in research actions) Only academic priorities Tools used by scientists are too complicated and too ‘narrow’ (‘research silo’). Teach also about conflicts

www.iowater.org I Scientists are only awarded after scientific publications. Cost obstacles: Example of scientists : International scientific articles are expensive Other Observatıons.....

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I People need more skills, not only (more) knowledge  More practical work in education, Not only reading text books  Interactıve skills for lecturers: student centered teaching skills, discovery  Teamwork activities for high school students

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Attitude has to change for; Discovery learning Make students responsible Widening view: different perspectives Value and incorporate local people’s contributions Include all stakeholders To define the different stakeholders and target population (mission and vision)

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Knowledge to be transferred to users/ policy makers Responsibility on dissemination of knowledge has to be shared with users Making the public aware of the issues, (in particular also the importance of mainstreaming of gender issues. )

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Disseminating of new knowledge needs local and organizational training and capacity building Use appropriate modes/ means and tools Include water in education curriculum at primary school Success should be acknowledged even if it is difficult to have quantifiable indicators of impacts

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Move from knowledge transfer to knowledge sharing - Promote people-to-people learning dialogues (workshops, networks…) - Gaps analysis (what are the needs?) and acknowledgment that target - communities are also holders of knowledge - Mechanisms to catch feedback from target communities

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Establish networks that can be interconnected Applied research institutes vs. traditional university research (chain of research – ‘river of knowledge)) Time allocation and need for mechanisms to understand each other (practionioner and scientists) The practitioner should define the problem

RECOMMENDATIONS… www.iowater.org I Improve communication provide funding Change system of evaluation, Evaluation committee that translate scientific results (learning alliance) Demonstrate community/stakeholders involvement
