3 Investigative Question What can we learn about the interaction of the English settlers and the Native Americans from the story of Pocahontas?

4 Introduction: Foldable Book 1.Examine the image and answer the question on each fold of the booklet. 2.After finishing the questions on each folded page, open the book to view the image on the inside and answer the questions there.

5 Introduction: T-Chart Current Knowledge Brainstorm a list of the things that you know about the story of Pocahontas. List as many things as you can.

6 Investigation: America’s Library Stories Half of the group will read English Settlers and the other half will read Princess Prisoner. Each folder has two versions of the same story. Choose the assignment that has the level of challenge you would like to work with today.

7 Teach Your Story 1.Find a partner who read a different story. 2.Tell your partner the story that you read. 3.Read your T-Chart –Add new ideas to your T-chart. –Cross out ideas that you disagree with now. –Put a question next to ideas that you are not sure about.

9 Introduction: Pre-reading, Questions Only 1.Look carefully at the picture. 2.Describe things that you see in the picture. 3.List questions that you have about this picture.

10 Investigation during reading: Cloze 1.Read out loud as a group the first paragraph of John Smith’s letter. 2.Choose the letter with the amount of support that you would like to have for your work today. 3.Read the letter. 4.Fill in the blanks in the Cloze activity.

11 Formal Assessment: Picture 1.Look closely at the picture below, including the writing. 2.Imagine how the English settlers and the Native Americans might have reacted to the image. 3.Draw the facial expressions in each circle to represent each group’s feelings. 4.Write three things that someone from each group might say about the image.

12 Discussion How might these activities support students in reading for understanding?
