2 Simple Present When do you use it? 1.To talk about general truths i.e. to talk about something that was true in the past, is true now, and will be true in the future. 2.To talk about habits or rituals or routines

3 Simple Present Examples (of general truths) 1.The Sun rises in the east and sets in the West. 2.Pure water boils at 100°C. Examples (of habits/rituals/routines) 1.Working adults pay taxes every year. 2.Sarina runs 10km every morning before going to the office.

4 Simple Present Adverbs used in Simple Present sentences 1.Always The students in Dunman High are always so respectful. 2.Often I often go to Kinokuniya to hunt for new recipe books. 3.Never He never speaks more than two sentences in class.

5 Simple Present Main Verbs used in Simple Present sentences 1.1 st Person Pronouns: I / We - the person who is speaking. Verbs used in 1 st person sentence are always the verb stem (basic form of the verb). Example: I go to school everyday. 2.2 nd Person Pronoun: You - the person whom one is speaking to. Verbs used in 2 nd person sentence are always the verb stem. Example: You walk to school everyday.

6 Simple Present Main Verbs used in Simple Present sentences 3.3 rd Person Pronouns: He/ She/ They/ It - the person(s)/ thing(s) whom one is talking about. Verbs used in 3 rd person sentence can be singular or plural. Singular verbs end with –s. Plural verbs do NOT end with –s. Examples She cleans the windows once a week. (singular) They visit Grandma every weekend. (plural)

7 Simple Present Auxiliary Verb used in Simple Present sentences Do Examples I do not like running. (1 st person) He/She does not like running. (3 rd person) Notice! The main verb (running) remains unchanged in both sentences.

9 Present Progressive/Continuous The verb “to-be” is the auxiliary verb (a.k.a helping verb) used in Present Progressive sentences. This verb tense is formed by combining the helping verb "to be" with the "-ing" (or the Present Participle) form of the main verb: Subject + am/ is/ are + verb-ing She is baking muffins.

10 Present Progressive/Continuous The tense of the sentence is determined by the auxiliary verb. The auxiliary verb changes according to the number of subjects. The present participle remains unchanged in both singular and plural sentences. Example (singular) Penny is running for the Osprey house. Example (plural) The lecturers are attending a workshop.

11 Present Progressive/Continuous When do you use it? 1.To express an activity that is in progress at the moment of speaking. The activity is temporary. It began in the past, is happening right now, and will probably end at some time in the future Examples I am writing an article for my website. (singular) They are sleeping on the couch. (plural)

12 Present Progressive/Continuous When do you use it? 2.To talk about something that is happening generally at this time Examples She is travelling with her friends to Taiwan. (singular) We are writing a book on the history of Rome. (plural)

13 Present Progressive/Continuous When do you use it? 3.Depending on the context, the Present Progressive can also be used to describe an event that is happening in the future. Examples Tonight, I am preparing Shepard’s Pie for my friends. (singular) Next week, they are going for an exchange programme in Tokyo. (plural)
