2 Malady Denotation: a sickness Part of Speech: noun (person, place, thing, or idea) The student blames his poor grades on a sleep- related malady. The Ice Bucket Challenge is helping to fund research for the incurable malady, ALS. Syn.: disorder, afflictionAnt.: health, relief What maladies afflict our nation?

3 Conscientiousness Denotation: the state of being very careful about doing what you are supposed to do; concerned with doing something correctly Part of Speech: noun (a person, place, thing, or idea) His conscientiousness caused him to return and clean up after the party even though it was not his job to do so. In order to hire an effective employee, employers look for people who possess conscientiousness. Syn.: meticulousness; thoroughness Ant.: sloppiness; carelessness Conscientiousness is a personality trait. How might a conscientious student act? Conscientiousness is a personality trait. How might a conscientious parent act?

4 Extroversion Denotation: Interest in or behavior directed toward others or one's environment rather than oneself Part of Speech: noun (a person, place, thing, or idea) His extroversion caused him to earn a detention since he was talking instead of doing the independent work. One actor claims the extroversion of some of his roles forces him to come out of his shell. Syn.: outwardness; socialness Ant.: introversion Countries with high extroversion scores on a personality test had more traffic fatalities than countries with low extroversion scores. Why? Extroversion is a personality trait. What could be some activities typical extroverts enjoy?

5 Neurotic Denotation: abnormally sensitive, obsessive, or tense and anxious. Part of Speech: adjective (describes nouns) His neurotic behavior caused him to lose his hair since he consistently worries about losing his binder. Dr. Gregory House from the TV show, House, could be considered a neurotic character. Syn.: maladjusted; unbalanced Ant.: laid-back; calm At times, we all may act slightly neurotic. Describe a time when you have temporarily acted this way. Neuroticism is a personality trait. Provide an example of a neurotic character (besides House) and explain why.
