2 Language Arts Houghton Mifflin--textbook anthology Daily Five for Literacy Independence- becoming excited about and responsible for their learning, and building stamina –Read to Self –Read to Others (social studies and science topics) –Listen to Reading –Working on Writing (choice) –Word Work (sight words and spelling lists) Step Up to Writing: expository and narrative Sharing/Speaking/Listening

3 Spelling/Phonics District Words Their Way Spelling Assessment 3 different spelling lists based on individual assessment results: Letter Name, Within Word and Syllable Juncture Assessment is given 3 times during the year. Students may move to different lists. Phonics instruction is sequential and based on class needs as determined by the assessments.

4 Math Strands : –Basic Facts –Patterning –Statistics, Data Analysis, Probability –Number Sense –Algebra and Functions –Measurement and Geometry –Mathematical Reasoning Houghton Mifflin Mathematics Marilyn Burns & Marcy Cook Problem solving experiences-- using manipulatives & math journals to explain their thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Cooperative Group Activities

5 Social Studies First Grade Circuits Communities, holidays, important people, civic responsibilities, comparing and contrasting life in different times and different places, basic economic concepts, needs vs. wants, & mapping skills Scholastic News Character Traits Project Cornerstone--We need volunteers. –Developmental assets –Builds a common language at school & home

6 Science Hands on experiment based units –Plants and Animals –Weather and Air –Solids and Liquids

7 PE, Music, Art, Technology, Library PE: Wed and Thurs, PE coach from YMCA Music: Weekly with grade level and bi- monthly with music teacher, Kathy Disney Art: Laura Abada, once a month Tech Lab: Weekly Eaton Library: Fridays

8 Grading 6 - Exceptional Proficiency: The student consistently exceeds grade level standards. 5 - Advanced Proficiency: The student consistently meets and often exceeds grade level standards. 4 - Proficient: The student regularly meets and demonstrates proficiency in grade level standards. 3 - Developing Proficiency: the student is beginning to, and often does, meet and demonstrate proficiency in the grade level standards. 2 - Limited Proficiency: The student is beginning to, and occasionally does, meet and demonstrate proficiency in the grade level standards. 1 - Minimal Proficiency: The student is not meeting or demonstrating proficiency in the grade level standards.

12 Student Behavior Class rules and school rules Positive behavior reinforced using a special clip chart in the classroom –praise & privileges Consequences if necessary –moving seats, loss of recess, speaking with the principal

13 Miscellaneous Snacks--Please send a healthy low-sugar snack for your child to eat at recess. Friday Folders--Please take a moment to look through your child’s folder each week and have your child return their Friday folder every Monday. Book Orders –great prices, free books for classroom –online ordering Star of the Week –poster and Mystery Bag Birthdays –stickers, bookmarks, pencils –no food please
