1 British Literature Entry Task: In chapter 3 of Once and Future King the reader is introduced to the character of Merlin. Merlin has an unique ability to live backwards; In your own words explain what you think this means.

2 Learning Goals Students will be exposed to other cultures and time periods, quality literature and effective/varied writing styles Students will begin to understand key facts that influenced and developed literature Students will write effectively in expository mode to examine/analysis a complex idea

3 Learning Targets For Middle Ages - Students will recognize cultural aspects of the Middle Ages and the corresponding effects on literature (women’s roles/chivalry) -Students will recognize the social influence of the Norman Invasion (feudalism/Hierarchal society) -Students will recognize the “Great Happenings” and their effects on the culture and literature (Crusades, Magna Carta, Black Death) -Students will recognize the concept of a pilgrimage -Students will recognize Chaucer’s style: (Frame story; iambic pentameter & couplets; satire; indirect/direct characterization) -Students will analyze the satire of typical British citizenry in the Middle Ages: (the church, Lesser nobility, Laborers, dishonest and greedy business people)

Describe the differences in how Kay and the Wart are treated. Give examples from the text. 3. Who does the Wart meet after spending the night in the forest? Give a visual description of this person and their surroundings. 4. Who/what is Archimedes? Describe his personality. 5. What does Merlyn help the Wart do? 6. How does Sir Ector respond to Merlyn? 7. In chapter 5 Wart undergoes his first transformation; What is he turned into by Merlin? What 2 lessons does he learn?

6 Canterbury Tales Record the following for your pilgrim: o Name of pilgrim and line numbers o Job/vocation o Social Position – Once everyone is finished we will arrange all characters on a caste system o Chaucer’s opinion of him/her (use textual support) o Find direct and indirect evidence to support the characterization (2 quotes minimum ; one direct and one indirect) o Draw out your character, label things as they were in the description. – Clothing, appearance, possessions – Vocation – Mode of travel – Traveling with another character Presentation: You will read the lines/description of the pilgrim. Present your character to the class Grading: Each student will turn in a finished product (worth 20 points). Grade will include a personal presentation grade (worth 10 points)

7 Prologue Assignment Each of you has been assigned one of Chaucer’s characters. You will be presenting your character (the presentation is worth 10 points) Steps: Read the lines Discuss your character – indirect/direct characterization; social class; physical characteristics; does Chaucer like him/her? Any additional insight you have on your character
