Industry Directions Large OEM’s are divesting themselves of electronics manufacturing –Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) Co’s. are now predominant assembler of electronics As manufacturing disappears, so does development –EMS companies becoming design and development centers for Electronics Manufacturers –EMS companies are building development staffs, albeit slowly as they become “full service” suppliers (e.g. design, build and field support). –Margins are thin; much less engineering support than OEMs used to have Manufacturing is moving off-shore, and development with it –EMS companies are international, so staff buildup is world- wide

10. EMS are probably the largest single employer of packaging engineers and technologist’s. EMS staff are at best minimal participants in the IEEE CPMT. We need a program to encourage the EMS’s to participate directly and or support their staff to participate in the IEEE CPMT. An Outreach Program To the EMS
