Japanese Whaling and Canada Harp Seal Hunt By Cori Mancuso!

Japanese Whaling *Hand harping began in Japan as early as the 12 th century. *Following World War II it became a cheap source of protein when Japan was impoverished. It was a tradition, and asking them to stop they say, “would be like Australians not being able to eat meat pies, and the English giving up fish and chips.”

History As Japan got wealthier, the whale meat grew unpopular. (Definitely since it was bland and never tasted good in the first place). But Japan, Norway, and Iceland, remain hunting and killed around 800 in 2006-2007. Supports say it is needed for food security, yet the average Japanese person only eats an ounce of whale meat a year.

Research Whaling A year after the International Whaling Commission made a law restricting commercial Whaling in 1982, which came into effect in 1986, the Japanese started their “ Scientific Whaling.” There is an article VIII in the Regulation of Whaling, which allows the right to use whales for scientific research. Iceland and Norway are the only countries who still do commercial whaling hunts.

Controversy Those opposing, argue that Research Whaling is a disguise for Commercial Whaling. They also say whaling is not really tradition, it was more invented. It is only promoted by a voiced group of traditionalist nationalists.

According to the Japanese Whaling Association…. * They research to better “control” whales. *They also say they sell whale meat because it is required by scientific research to not let products be wasted. *Haha, what a coincidence. "I haven't met one person, pro-whalers or not, outside of the Fisheries Agency payroll who believe that these researches are useful," says Greenpeace Australia Pacific's CEO Steve Shallhorn.

Canada Harp Seal Hunt

Seal Execution and Torture 220,000 Harp Seals were massacred in 2008. Every year, there are around a couple thousand Canadian Fisherman shooting and clubbing 2 week-2 month year old seals. Babies! They are hooked and taken to be brutally skinned while ALIVE AND CONSCIOUS.

The Malicious Injustice They sell the skin to European and Asian furriers. There bodies are then left to rot.

Competition There is a competition with sealers to kill as many seals before they are gone. In 2008, there were sealers all along the long liners on the front,( which is known as the second part of the hunt which is located of the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador), and they finished there ration of seals within TWO DAYS.

Some gruesomely disgusting videos on Canadian Seal Hunts Watch at your own risk, it is very bloody and very disturbing. If you don’t want to watch, I understand.
