1 EDGAR ALLAN POE´S LIFE By: Mª Ángeles Teruel Moreno 1º BHI

2 Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe (1809—1849) was an American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor who is famous for his tales of horror. His tale ‘‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’’ (1841) initiated the modern detective story. ‘‘The Raven’’(1845) is one of the best-known poems in the national literature.

3 CHILDHOOD Edgar was born on January 19 of 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were actors. His father left him. In addition, his mother dead when he was two years old. Afterwards, the Mrs Allan adopted Edgar. Mr Allan didn’t want his heir to be the son of actors. When Mrs Allan dead, John Allan ended his relationship whit Edgar.

4 WIFE In 1835 Edgar married Virginia Clemm (1822-1847). In 1842 Virginia showed the first signs of the disease tuberculosis. He began to drink for the disease of his wife. Finally, Virginia dead in 1847. Edgar’s conduct deteriorated, but this helped him to write new stories.

5 DEATH Edgar dead on October 7 of 1849, in Baltimore. In a newspaper of the epoch it was said that he died for alcoholism. Poe was buried in the cemetery of Westminster, but, many years later, in 1875, his remains were moved to the fields of the cemetery of Westminster.
