1 Journal Question #3 When was a time that you had gripes about school/home/activities? What was it about? What did you do to try and resolve the issue? Were you successful? Why or why not.

2 Verge of Revolution WHY AND WHAT ELSE COULD THEY HAVE DONE?

3 Englishmen (and Englishwomen) They were all as English as you are American They had family and political ties to England They had financial ties to England England was the most powerful country at the time. “The sun never sets on the British Empire” England defended the colonies against the French and Natives during the French and Indian War

4 What problems are there in America today? Create a “T” chart On one side put “ties” On the other side put “divides” Create lists of things on each side that either divide the country or tie it together Share your list with a neighbor. Pick the 4 most important items (they do not have to be on a particular side of the list)

5 Enlightenment Ideas Life, Liberty, Property Separation of powers Separation of Church and State Equal Representation under the law NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION Essentially: people decide what is best for them and make the laws that they are willing to follow

6 The Beef List Nature of the revolutionaries Raw Materials exploit Taxes Sugar Official documents (Stamp Act) Tea Unfair policies

7 More Beef Writs of Navigation Items traded with Britain must be on British Ships Quartering of Troops Boston “Massacre” 3 killed immediately, 2 died from wounds Tea Act Tea is now taxed in an effort to help out the struggling “British East India Co.”

8 Those darn acts… Everyone needs to grab a blank sheet of printer paper 8 different colors to write with… if you want

9 Activity You will be put into groups and reading different perspectives regarding the causes of the American revolutionary war. Step 1: Read your assigned perspective Step 2: decide what the most compelling argument is Step 3: DEBATE! In groups of four you will share why your argument is the main cause of the Revolution. Step 4: In one paragraph write why you believed the American Revolution began citing specific evidence.
